The Vegan Body Building Movement

“Is it possible to be a good bodybuilder and be a vegan? Yes,” said Jose Antonio, the chief executive of the International Society of Sports Nutrition. “But is it ideal? No.”

Vegan bodybuilders may face challenges getting sufficient amino acids, found in meats, Antonio said, adding that although protein can be found in vegetables and nuts, they must be consumed in greater quantities to get the same amount as their counterparts in meat. “The amount of rice and beans you need to eat would fill up a Mexican restaurant,” he said.

Other nutritionists and bodybuilders have argued that a disciplined vegan diet, consisting of things like hemp-based protein supplements, peanut butter, nuts, vegetables and legumes, can yield similar, if not better, results than a meat- or dairy-filled diet. Carefully monitored, vegans can get the same amount of protein with less fat or toxins, they argue. (For a midafternoon snack, Sitko sometimes eats 10 bananas.)

The Fast and the Flashy at Burning Man Ultramarathon

  • Posted on September 13, 2010 at 9:10 pm

Burning Man ultramarathon

With outfits ranging from skimpy to salacious, some 30 bleary-eyed runners completed the first-ever Burning Man Ultramarathon, proving that arid weather and late-night parties weren’t enough to derail even the most dedicated Burner athletes from slogging 30 miles through sand, sun and dust.

After months of planning, organizer Cherie Yanek and 36 other competitors kicked off the race at 5 am on September 1. Temperatures hovered around 50 degrees and onlookers included party-goers who hadn’t yet called it a night. There were no dust storms — a frequent concern during the annual gathering at Black Rock City — though temperatures did climb roughly 40 degrees by the time the final runner crossed the finish line shortly after 12:30 pm.

Topless Soccer–but where’s the pictures?

  • Posted on June 17, 2008 at 11:58 am

I noticed an odd little sports article today on Google news and MSNBC (their article is now mysteriously missing) about Austria and Germany’s women’s soccer team playing a match topless (with painted on jerseys).

Now, as a woman that is interesting, but not particularly fascinating (half my time is spent around topless women after all).

What struck me as funny, however, is that none of the American papers showed any pictures of it….uhm…ok. This is news right?

Damn and tarnation, this country is prude (and quite a few other countries’ papers weren’t showing anything much either).  [I'll spare you the rant how it is OK to splash just about any sort of graphic violence on the news, but women playing sports topless is a 'no no.' ]

I finally tracked down some pictures for you guys from a New Zealand (!) news website.

Here they are:
