Amazing Synchronicity story.

  • Posted on November 4, 2011 at 9:26 pm
Sunday night, I was going to a Halloween party with my fiancee, when while riding in her car, I felt like I was having a heart attack. This lasted for several minutes, and I just kept silent about it, as I'm only 29, and seriously doubted it was a heart attack.

Then just today, (Friday), I found out a good friend of mine died of a heart attack on sunday night, around the time I had this episod

The Inward and Occult Virtue of Things

Superstition

In this video, the box is programmed so that the little light on the wall (called a key light) is switched on for a few seconds, then the food magazine light is switched on and a little food is dispensed. Nothing the pigeon does has any affect on when or whether the lights are switched on/off or when/whether food is dispensed.

Magick and Marijuana

Wishcraft – The Magician as Djinni

Doesn't this make magicians, Djinn (Genies)?

Getting ready for Halloween!

  • Posted on October 2, 2011 at 8:00 pm
So how many of you are participating in Halloween this year?

Handing out candy?

Dressing up for Halloween party?

Practicing a little Necromancy, or conjuring demons, at a graveyard, or in a spooky forest or darkened basement?

Anything else you can think of?

I'm going to carve jack'o'lanterns with my fiancee and family and hand out candy on Halloween. I might even dress up with my fiancee and go to a Halloween party at a local bar we go dance and sing karaoke at.

I doubt I'll be doing any Halloween magick though.

Personal Experiment (Eating Grave Dirt)

  • Posted on October 1, 2011 at 5:50 pm
Someone asked that I move my current experiment to open forum. Since I try to make people happy, lol, I shall oblige.

First some background. I don't tend to take things at face value and have experimented in a magickal sense for almost 30 years now. Some things have worked out great and some things have had ill effects on me. BUT....I find each one beneficial, because how are we to KNOW and be able to speak of it to others as knowledge and truth?

So what is my newest experiment?

Over two weeks ago I began ingesting a base of plain dirt taken from several areas. I did this each night in small doses. I made mental note of any changes in behavior, personality, ability to contact one particular spirit and communicate with that spirit. Then 2 nights ago I began ingesting grave dirt from a particular grave.

I am very curious what effects if any this has on a person, if it aids in connection to the spirit the dirt was taken from, how much this will enhance communication with that spirit, is it possible to take on characteristics of that individual, is it possible to make such a connection that instead of touches of recognition....can you actually be penetrated at will by this spirit without possession taking place. And, is it at all possible to develop memories of that spirit, of their life inside their last host?

This likely is of no interest whatsoever to other individuals, but I mainly would love to know if I can take on actual memories of a dead person. So I have chosen someone whose effects would be dramatic and easily noticeable. I am ingesting grave dirt from John's grave.

That in a nutshell explains the experiments that I have recently started posting in my blog. I figured it was of such little interest to others, that it was not worthy of forum posting, so I decided to log the results in my blog that rarely gets visited. Now I have been informed that it may be of interest and it was requested I bore you all to tears with it.

Journaling with Purpose

  • Posted on September 30, 2011 at 9:13 am
A discussion started in another thread, where I mentioned some of the cognitive biases that might lead to false impressions about what magick is and how it works. Specifically I named base rate neglect and conformation bias, but I think the magician does well to be aware of the whole topic area, and the general idea that a strong motivation to maintain a given belief has a lot of power over how phenomena are perceived and interpreted.

And while these issues as I've discussed them are indeed a part of modern cognitive science literature, in occult literature and specifically in the context of magick development, the potential for self-deception and admonishments to avoid it predates the science. Self-deception isn't the only so-called pitfall of magick and mystical practice. For example, any technique that includes markedly altered states of awareness, because of how remarkable the sensory experience can be, can develop into something of an addiction, wherein the value of the experience is lost in favor of the sensory features, pursued for their own sake. The aspiring magician does well to be aware of all such issues, and to learn or develop strategies against them.

I raised the idea of good journaling practices as a means of addressing the self-deception issue, and further suggested that over years of magick practice:

I don't doubt your word at all, IA. But neither do assume that any old journaling method is sufficient to counteract the effects of a strong motivation to confirm ones expectations/beliefs/hopes, and I even think it's possible that poor journaling (from my point of view) might be counterproductive in terms of self-deception.

Please understand that I have no way of knowing if you're deceiving yourself or not. Maybe you are and maybe you aren't, and that's your affair, not mine. I'm discussing a general principle here that I've given a great deal of thought to in the past, which just happened to be suggested by our discussions in the Where's the Science thread.

With that in mind, I have in fact developed a journaling method with the cognitive science of self-deception in mind, which is one example of how science can and should be informative of good magick practice. You and the rest of the readership is invited to review the method, and comment or criticize, use it, or whatever you like. I've recently revised it, by the way, so if you read the document previously, it's worth going over the revision. It's written in the same spirit, but is somewhat more specific and, I hope, better:

Familiar spirit (not a servitor type thing) for gathering magick technique knowledge?

So, I've been thinking about constructing a familiar. The only thing is that traditional servitor construction methods don't appeal to me, and at the same time I want some permanency to feeling the entities presence, otherwise I forget its there.
The function of the servitor would be to gather magickal technique and props and such for ritual work. Would anybody happen to have experience in this matter?

Routine!

I have recently acquired myself my own apartment, that I do share with a flat mate however he travels home on the weekend leaving the whole place to me.

This now gives me time to do whatever I want and following a recent event, I'd feel like picking up the sword and wand and throwing it about the place would be a great idea :D.

I've already decided to turn practice basic rituals weekly (LRP/MP/QC) as well as a big ritual on one of said days.

Granted Magick is often quite a wholly personal affair, I'd still be looking for suggestions of exercise or whatnot.

Magic(k) vs. Magical

Next, how many things do you suppose were inexplicable to our distant ancestors, things they may have thought of as magic(K) then, but that pretty much no one thinks is magic(k) now simply because we have a more comprehensive knowledge base? That's a rhetorical question, and the rhetorical answer is, of course, lots.

So here's a question and I would like answered by the readership, by as many people as read it hopefully: when those past peoples experienced inexplicable things, but those things are readily explained now, was it magic(k) then but not now? Or were they mistaken? Or, if you have another idea, what?

Guitar amp and cabinet as an altar.

  • Posted on September 21, 2011 at 12:09 pm
I just got this idea while listening to Electric Wizard's "Saturn's Children" such a sick tune. What if you were to have an amplifier and speaker cabinet used as an altar, the dimensions wouldn't be mathematically equal with Crowley's diagram in Book 4 but it would be cool to work with your amp to such an extent and consecrate it.
I always thought it would be cool to start a set by circling round with an athame around the whole stage and invoking Qabalistic dieties and godforms which could make the show a transient spiritual experience (especially in the vein of stoner hypnotic doom) not necessarily evil but rather heavy riffs as a form of non-verbal communication of the divine. I think that would be cool.
I remember seeing a friend's band play in a basement for the first time (Riff Cannon ((boston MA)) ) and being so drunk and in a hypnotic state from how much I liked the riffs I just fell down and went black and did a qabalistic cross as I felt my subtle body alight and I knew I had to continue on in my musical adventures.

I guess the amp (where the power and tone comes from) can be viewed as sort of the supernal triangle where voltage, current and impedance come forth to create signal which is fed to the lower speaker cabinet where the sound comes out which is sort of like Malkuth in a general sense also that the standard cabinet has 4 speakers in it to represent the elements condensed and materielized in Malkuth.

Your Most Embarassing Occult Moments

  • Posted on September 15, 2011 at 4:06 pm
On distinguished forums like OccultCorpus, we like to present ourselves as competent, mysterious occultists with a firm grounding in our paths of choice. While there is some truth to this self-image, in my experience, we also tend to screw up sometimes. We make glaring errors in rituals. We accidentally break tools. We make faux-pas in a group ritual. We fall down in the middle of the LBRP. Occultists are human and, as such, prone to embarassingly all-too-human moments.

This brings us to the point of this thread: share amusing stories of embarassing occult moments you or people you know have experienced.

***

I'll get the ball rolling with an embarassing true story of my own. One Summer evening, I was serving as Hierophant and presiding over the Initiation of a new Neophyte into the Ordo Aurum Lucerna (O.'.A.'.L.'.). As those in the Golden Dawn tradition know, this is a most solemn occasion. Everything was going well and all of the officers were on-point in their performances. And then it happened. We reached the segment of the Neophyte Initiation when the candidate must be placed between the Pillars of Jachin and Boaz. Because we were performing the ceremony in a small room, the pillars were quite close together and as it turns out, too close together. When we placed the Candidate between the pillars, he bumped into the pillar of Boaz, which went TOPPLING down onto the floor of the temple and sent its red crowning pyramid FLYING off and almost beheading our resident Hegemon!

"Dear Lord of the Universe..." I thought, totally embarassed. As the other Officers stood staring in shock, I decided to act fast so we would not disrupt the energy and pace of the ceremony. I raised my Hierophant's Wand in my right hand and my open left hand beside it and silently motioned for everyone to pause and stand still. I then walked clockwise through the Temple to the Pillar, repositioned it with its red pyramid atop it, and made another clockwise round back to my station. We carried on with the ritual and completed it. But oh, how we Officers had a good laugh afterwards!

Okay, your turn.

How to put "Fire" in a bottle?

  • Posted on September 10, 2011 at 10:50 am
So, one thing I do is collect materials frequently referenced in Magickal workings in little bottles, so that I can have 'em available when I want to use them - from things like salt and copper, to blood, mercury, and the like.

However, one of the four "classical elements" has thrown me for a loop.
It wasn't Air - that was easy to bottle. Just take a bottle.
It wasn't Water - that was easy to bottle. Just fill a bottle with water.
It wasn't Earth - that was easy to bottle. I just put some dirt in a bottle.

It was Fire. How do I capture "fire" in a way that is as meaningful as a bottle of water, air, or earth? Or don't I?

I've heard some sources say "Just use sulfur instead," but I've already got a bottle for Sulfur, and, alchemically (which is one way in which I utilize these bottles), it's distinct from pure "Fire."

The best solutions I've been able to come up with are to either:
- Screw the bottles, use a lit candle
- Fill a bottle with alcohol / kerosene / oil / other flammable liquid, and open and light it when "Fire" is desired.

Do any of y'all have any other ideas?

Fear.

  • Posted on September 9, 2011 at 12:14 am
I have started this thread as a discussion of fear. Sometimes my works have been hampered by it, even as I write this I sit in the small hours of the night whilst reading Wang's Qabalistic Tarot and listening to soothing music I still feel a small rippling of fear. I have always feared being alone in my house at night, though nothing has ever happened to provide valid reason for this.
I'm not sure of what it is but I do feel a small subtle fear of even reading about esoteric knowledge. I don't fear spirits or perhaps I do, rationally I know I have done nothing to evoke them and that it is unlikely. I'm not so sure, it's not that I feel spirits or any of that but I just feel that these hours belong not to me or to the light, they are the darkened melancholy small hours while everyone sleeps and other forces reign.

Has anyone else experienced this fear and overcome it? Or succumb? Where do you think fear comes from? can It really be controlled? (think of the courage of a soldier does he ever really overcome fear or how does he numb it out?).

Perhaps this thread will bear fruitful ideas.

-Frater S.E.

Trance Channelling

  • Posted on September 1, 2011 at 5:48 pm
Due to the nature of my own magical endeavors in the last few years I've started to take an interest in the subject of "trance channelling" and have been casually researching some of the usual suspects known for it and what they were communicating. Now this can be a fairly broad subject depending on how it is approached. I just want to get overall opinions and perspectives from others here. The phenomenon seems to go a bit unnoticed and/or taken for granted in the magical/occult community. It is a cornerstone of magical practices but I very seldom hear much about it in any serious way. I've noticed a tendency to dismiss it publicly but privately it seems to be taken very seriously.

What do you think about it?

How valid would you consider some of the "revelations"?

Have you noticed a common underlying theme in what has been communicated over the years by various channellers?

Why do you think these same themes keep coming up?

Feel free to discuss any aspect of it here.

Be a smartie every day!

  • Posted on August 31, 2011 at 2:34 pm
I need to preface this- there is no way I can say the following without sounding like an arrogant ass, and I am aware of that.

The people that know me in real life often comment on how smart I am. This is said in tones of admiration and envy. I find myself frustrated by these comments- sure, the ego boost feels good, yadda yadda, but the thing is that the people saying this have just as much bloody chance to be smart if they want to.

The other day, my wife (not for the first time) expressed despair during a conversation about an area of knowledge that is a specialty of hers, because I disagreed with her and proved my point with evidence and whatnot. I wasn't being condescending or aggressive or any such thing, but the being wrong part bugged the hell out of her.

Her despair was that she feels she is not now, nor can ever be, as smart as I am even in areas she specializes in. So I've been trying to explain to her that being smart is a thing you can do- a choice you can make.

This is a set of advice I gave her and would like your comments on:

  • Being smart is a two-part thing. The first is the most important, and that is the configuration of your mind, its habits and patterns, the equipment YOU develop in there. The second is knowledge.
  • Do not self censor. People who define themselves as "not smart" quash their own thoughts. The pattern is "brilliant idea/insight-NO WAIT I thought that and I am stupid, therefore that thought is stupid". Define yourself as smart to yourself- tell that story, and let your thoughts fly free like little... electrochymical birds or something.
  • THINK. Be actively curious. Think about everything all the time. Why are roadsigns green? What evolutionary path could possibly have lead to that animal or plant having that feature? What would happen, really, if you were transported to 1922?
  • Be brutal to yourself. Never accept not being able to figure something out. Put the work in. Stop only if you find yourself at a dead-end needing more evidence to work with, and strongly consider acquiring that information.
  • Think about thinking. Analyze your thought processes critically. Know your mind and hack it when you want to.
  • Read a lot. Read varied things, actively and critically. Read a book about Star Trek, move on to Sun Tsu, check out a nineteenth century novel that is not considered a classic.
  • If you are magically inclined, open yourself to getting ideas and information from the aether. Consult with spirits in dreams, work on your telepathy and steal them from people's heads.
What do you guys think?

Staying Moral

  • Posted on August 31, 2011 at 10:24 am
This is a post asking about what spiritual, ritualistic, occultic means you have to be able to stay moral or transmute the feelings that make it difficult to stay ethical in behavior or at least refine them into something that isn't as destructive. Moral in this case what you believe to be right and what your ideals are.

I've found out by doing a ritual for a specific goal, refocuses my mind on achieving that goal. Recently, I've been doing chants to acquire money, and by having my mind completely focused on one thing seems to make it easier to retain self control (including my temper) instead of letting it wander around like it usually does. Lack of focus or concentration= more emotional and more impulsive = more likely to screw up.

I also found The Bornless One incantation makes it easier to exert my own will over my self, and easier to over come laziness.

What means do you have or have used to so you can keep doing what you think is right?

Thought Forms Vs Real Spirits

  • Posted on August 29, 2011 at 8:03 pm
I have noticed most here have a different views on what a spirit actually is. I personally tend to error on the side of caution and view most of them as thoughtforms that are merely projections of the human mind. Mostly.

Then there is the other side of the debate who say all spirits are real, that have an objective existence that is not dependent on humanity's existence and are not creations of our own minds.

Then are a few here who have the view both are possible.

My question is towards those of the third camp.
How are you able to tell the difference between a real spirit and one produced by your own mind and expectations?

Then the second question is, if you do believe all spirits are thought forms, how are you able to tell the difference between the traditional egregore (say I was worshiping Ganesha and trying to get him to manifest) and one that is of your accidental creation. How do you avoid fooling your self?

Please not this is not a debate of if spirits are real or not (theory), but more a discussion of techniques on discernment (practical).

This is also not a thread asking how to figure out if a spirit called is an imposter. I think there already is a thread for that.

Numbness during asana – advice?

Hello all, I've recently started to practice asana each day. I'm sitting in the half-lotus position, with my right foot on top of my left knee. About 10-12 minutes into my sitting, I get that "pins and needles" feeling of numbness in my right leg, making it difficult to continue past 15 minutes or so. Is this a problem? Should I make any adjustments to my position to try and get rid of this numbness, or just push on through it?

What is your take on this? Master mage or something entirely different?

  • Posted on August 28, 2011 at 7:50 pm
Today I went and visited a most interesting local place. You can read about it in this news story http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2008/feb/05/0205appy/.

For those not inclined to slog through that news story, here's the abridged version. About 17 years ago, a local guy gets a sudden and mysterious urge to start building. He starts laying bricks and such; many years and many bricks later he has built a castle, covered in Picture-Graphs (visual messages from the almighty which only he can see and decode), with the trinkets and offerings that people leave there cemented into the very floor of the castle. It's still a work in progress, but there's a lot of castle and a lot to see. Now, what I want to know is this:

1. Do you think there is or isn't something magickal at work here? It seems plain as day to me, a supernatural force compels this man to sacrifice his time and energy to build a huge monument to the same supernatural force. Though he interprets it as the Christian God, there's no telling what it could be.

2. If so, do you think this place is a place of power? I personally think its not, in a way it seems like a spiritual vacuum that this man might unconsciously be trying to fill. Your thoughts?

Unconscious Ritual or How I Couldn’t Stop Performing the LRBP at Work

  • Posted on August 28, 2011 at 12:51 pm
The other day I was at work..shilling wine like a professional when I became aware of something which disturned me a little. Unbeknownst to me, I was performing the LRBP mentally ( Astrally?). The visual, auiditory, and physical sensations were seen as an overlay on reality ( reminded me of the now ancient overhead transparent sheets). The Ritual kept repeating over and over in my head. I was curios at first and let things run their course. I became aware of it in much the same fashion as one becomes aware of hearing a radio in a distant room. As my attention became more focused the visuals and sounds became louder. After awhile it began to worry me that I was not in control of events. It took a few minutes of zen meditation to cure the situation.

A few things which may help:
-I've not performed physical daily ritual in a few weeks. I've been overwhelmed with finding work, current work, and making life plans that doing any spiritual work has felt complicated by life right now.
- Since the event I've been able to slide into and out of a ritual mindset much easier. Remind me of NLP work I've done in the past.
- and just for the sake of ruling out the mundane, I'm not on any medication nor am I diagnoses with any medical condition.

I've not encountered this before and was wondering if the community could shed some light on things.

How literal do you take myth/s?

Just what the title says. From rational: ('myths are a means for primitives to explain not yet understood phenomena') to romantic and poetic: ('myths are the foundation of reality') to magical: ('myths are to be created by oneself!')...

I am of the opinion that myths have to be taken literal in some aspect but that doesn't mean that one has to (physically) re-enact them.

Self transformative magick

So, as for alchemical workings of the self and its aspects, whats best?
Should I invoke a certain overall image I want to aspire to often, or do I need to be careful and remove and implement traits individually?

Perhaps I can invoke an overall image and see how well it encompasses my psyche, than edit, add, and remove traits as needed?
