Top Ten Guitar Trashing Musicians

  • Posted on March 17, 2010 at 4:58 pm

This blog is dedicated to the rock and roll art of guitar smashing onstage.  This blog lists, according to my own opinion, the greatest rock and roll guitar smashers/destroyers of all time.  This list only partially takes into account guitar playing ability, but more importantly focuses on the infamy of the guitarist, his style, and methods of destruction.

10.  Billy Corgan from The Smashing Pumpkins

Look kids!  This is when Billy Corgan was still cool and could rock out insane crazy!

9.  Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue

Though a bassist, I have a soft spot for Nikki and perennially destructive on-stage habits.

8.  Paul Simonon of The Clash

Another bassist, Paul Simonon, destroyed his bass on stage, documented in the cover to their classic London Calling LP.

the clash

7.  Craig Nicholls of the Vines

Craig Nicholls will freak out and break shit in the middle of shows as well as at the end of shows, which places him at number seven on our list.  These outbursts are possibly due to Asperger syndrome, a diagnosis which came out in a court case for his antics in 2004.

One notable Craig Nicholls outburst was on The Late Show With David Letterman where he smashed his guitar and trashed his band’s drum kit.

6. Stevie Ray Vaughn

While he didn’t actually smash it to pieces, he instead sort of abuses his guitar while still getting some amazing sounds out of it.   There is more musical artistry, and less raw destruction, than the others on the list. Check it out!

5. Sid Vicious from the Sex Pistols

I don’t know how often he actually smashed his bass, but Sid reaches mid point on our list for being the only one to actually smash his guitar on a fan’s head.

4.  Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple (and Rainbow)

Ritchie Blackmore’s classical flair really showed off the finer techniques of guitar destruction throughout the 70s.

3.  Kurt Cobain from Nirvana

Post 70s, Kurt Cobain is only one to really get guitar smashing right.  He always destroyed his sets with as much passion and painful integrity as he put into his music.  Kurt Cobain shows us that guitar smashing, if done right, isn’t a stale gimmick–but an art form.

2. Jimi Hendrix from the Jimi Hendrix Experience

Jimi Hendrix was once told by Townsend to stop stealing his guitar destroying act.  Jimi paid no heed, thank god.

"When I saw Hendrix do that at Monterey, it was like a supreme sacrifice from out of the Bible," says Carlos Santana. "It was very spiritual and voodoo-like, and I think he was taking music all the way back to Africa … I didn’t get the same feeling from Peter Townshend. He was more like a brat throwing a television."

1. Pete Townsend from The Who

Though I could easily put Jimi in the top spot for taking guitar destruction to a new level, I decided to go ahead and award the top honor to Pete Townsend, the rock and roll originator of the on stage guitar smash.  In 1964, Townsend had a problem with his electric guitar during a show – it frustrated him so much he banged the guitar against the ceiling, where it broke, and according to Townsend, "I had no recourse but to look as though I meant to do it, so I smashed the guitar and jumped all over the bits … it gave me a fantastic buzz."

(This video, while it doesn’t use Who music, has the best vintage Pete Townsend madness I could find.)

Dishonorable Mention: Paul Stanley of Kiss

A big gimmick like Kiss itself, Paul Stanley uses dummy guitars made from cheap poplar for his finale.  How do people consider Kiss to be musicians?  Toy manufactures would be more accurate.

*Note, I didn’t include Jeff Beck from the movie Blow Up since that was entirely staged by the director rather than being a reflection of Beck himself.

Honorable Mention:  Jerry Lee Lewis

Perhaps the first modern performer to deliberately destroy his instrument, Jerry Lee Lewis set a piano on fire at the end of a live performance in protest at being billed below Chuck Berry.

No video footage exists, but here is a re-enactment from Great Balls of Fire! starring Dennis Quaid as Jerry Lee Lewis.

And on that note…I’m outtie.

Iza

Well hello there

  • Posted on March 13, 2010 at 9:51 pm

Sorry to disappear from blogging for so long, but after losing a beloved close-one to lung cancer, I then immediately started a new semester at school. I have had little time for anything including blogging or photographs.

That said I had a few pics in my camera I can post for the hell of it.  You’ll see my new hair cut too :)

This is some cat who was desperately trying to get into my home…no idea why. Haven’t seen him before or since!

Been working on the blog as you guys noticed and now I’m attempting to integrate my blog better with Facebook.  This post is basically a test to help me do that.

But while I’m here I may as well give a kiss out to all my loyal fans, and I have the most loyal ones.  *smooch*

“Best Buds” starring Natalie Portman

  • Posted on January 19, 2010 at 9:17 pm

My source says Natalie Portman will be starring in a girl stoner movie called “Best Buds.”  Hope to hear more soon.  With “Best Buds” and “Her Highness,” she is making the choice to fully delve into stoner films.  Good for her.

Hello WordPress

  • Posted on January 16, 2010 at 4:24 pm

Welcome to my blog just moved to WordPress from Typepad.

Read these posts here if you want to see how AWFUL it is to try and export from Typepad.  They even jumble up filenames and exclude extensions and yet leave no easy way to download file or change permalinks. I gave up even trying to get the permalinks to come along. I was happy enough just to get images back.

Typepad Export Options: Congenial Lies from SixApart’s Anil Dash

I haven’t even started on the design yet, but I’m happy with the process of installing new themes with WordPress.

My suggestion is to never ever start a blog on anything other than WordPress because if you stay with blogging long enough that’s where you’ll end up.  And my other suggestion is never EVER use TypePad because they make it too hard to leave deliberately.

xoxo,

Izabael

If any of you WordPress gurus have suggestions for me on anything, I’m happy to listen.

When all is said and done, friendship is the only trustworthy fabric of the affections.

  • Posted on November 25, 2009 at 9:26 am

So-called love is a delirious inhuman state of mind: when hot it substitutes indulgence for fair play; when cold it is cruel, but friendship is warmth in cold, firm ground in a bog.

What have I been up to?

  • Posted on May 12, 2009 at 3:52 pm

I haven’t been writing much lately as far as blogs, so to break the ice I’m just going to talk about some random things on my mind.

Regarding more “magickal” blog topics:  I’m helping pAmphAge write a small but comprehensive how-to manual on magick (with no “bullshit” allowed).  This has been sucking out my “magickal” writing efforts, but there should be a lot more going on magickally here towards the end of the year as the book nears completion.

Regarding the new Eminem album Relapse:  This is a guilty pleasure.  I’m trying to get it out of my system now so I’m not still listening to it all year with everyone else.  Also, how many dumb celebrities are going to take the bait and get mad at Eminem for the things he says?  Eminem is the motley fool jester of mainstream media.  To get mad at him only makes one look even more foolish (and helps Eminem sell more albums of course!)

Regarding EverQuest:  As some of you know I play fantasy MMOs when I have a chance.  I’ve been playing since I was a wee tot.  I’ve played Asheron’s Call 1&2, Age of Conan, Anarchy Online, Dark Age of Camelot, Star Wars Galaxies, Everquest 2,  Warhammer Online, Lineage II (where I was a GM for a short while), and of course World of Warcraft.  I can say that after all these years, EverQuest is still my favorite!  If you like any of these games, I seductively suggest you check out the game without which there wouldn’t even be a World of Warcraft.  EverQuest is 10 years old and the world is huge now!  Plenty to see and do!  I love it.  If anyone wants to know my EverQuest character names and server, you can email me privately and I might let you know :)

Regarding the new Star Trek movie:  Good casting! I rarely get to say this about a movie nowadays.  But finally…good casting!

Guess that’s it for now!

Myanmar: My favorite photo

  • Posted on May 12, 2008 at 7:10 pm

myanmar

While reading through some of the disaster stories going around, I stumbled upon this single photo that stood out from all the others.

This photo is blissfully contemplative to my eyes, and sums up what I think every spiritual belief system should:  The timeless is untouched by  any changes of the earth.

The rise and fall of empires elicits only an understanding smirk from the Buddha.

!Feliz Cinco de mayo!

  • Posted on May 5, 2008 at 3:32 pm

Today is the traditional day of celebrating with a Tequila in one hand and a beautiful latina in the other.

(Ok, not really.  It’s actually about the Mexican’s kicking bootie over the French in 1862–but who remembers that :)

Have fun everyone!  Don’t drink and drive (one of the only good laws we have on the books–feel free to break most of the other rules today though!)

Until then here is a picture of a white lion for no apparent reason except he’s cute and has really clean fur!

Quickie Blog: Chelsea Clinton, Marijuana legality map, and the Mars Volta.

  • Posted on February 1, 2008 at 2:46 pm

Ahh. I haven’t done many of these quickie blogs like I wanted.  But basically I just string together a few random thoughts going through my head.  (If they have anything in common then it’s pure synchronicity.)

When did Chelsea Clinton turn into a babe?  I mean seriously.  I remember her with the frizz.  She needs to dump that goofy boyfriend and get with the ladies.

Here’s a map of the legality of pot I found:

And finally the Mars Volta have a new album!! Excited to get into it! So far so good (so what??)

That’s all for now!

A Quickie blog…

  • Posted on August 27, 2007 at 10:04 pm

I just listed my blog here:

Strange Blog Directory. I think I’m strange enough for any list.

This guy’s blog layout is excellent.  Simple and elegant.

eatdrinksleepmovabletype

He has a survey up of how long it takes people to write blogs.  I can see I’m wayyyy off the scale with some of my movie critique blogs taking me 6+ hours to write. *sigh*  This one is better. Took me…6 minutes :-)
