Did Prehistoric Giant Squid Make Art From Bones?

kraken 300x225 Did Prehistoric Giant Squid Make Art From Bones?

For decades, paleontologists have puzzled over a fossil collection of nine Triassic icthyosaurs (Shonisaurus popularis) discovered in Nevada’s Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park. Researchers initially thought that this strange grouping of 45-foot-long marine reptiles had either died en masse from a poisonous plankton bloom or had become stranded in shallow water.

But recent geological analysis of the fossil site indicates that the park was deep underwater when these shonisaurs swam the prehistoric seas. So why were their bones laid in such a bizarre pattern? A new theory suggests that a 100-foot-long cephalopod arranged these bones as a self-portrait after drowning the reptiles. And no, we’re not talking about Cthulhu.

Update: I thought the absurdity of this (there is no actual evidence, just speculation on the part of the researchers) was obvious, but apparently I was wrong (thanks to Liddell for this link). It’s a lot like that bacteria in space rocks story from a while back – it’s based on someone looking at some pictures and saying what they might represent. There’s no actual discovery here.

The Naga

  • Posted on April 2, 2011 at 1:41 pm
I'm fairly sure that the majority of you know what the Naga are, and at least a vague semblance of the lore behind the mythological race. However, for those of you who do not...just take a look at the link:

Naga

Now, these serpentine entities were said to be as intelligent, if not more so, than humanity... Fully capable of communication, they were also depicted as possessing the potential of both negative and positive personality traits, dependent upon the individual Naga. Having always held quite an adoration of both serpents and spiders, I tend to delve into the various species with significant interest. The King Cobra
is an exceptionally intelligent snake... Thought to have moderate reasoning skills, it's capable of taking down prey that it's never encountered...and gauge the best method of doing so through mock strikes and teasing the adversary into displaying its weaknesses. In combination to such, I've read stories that display them as potentially being vastly more intelligent than originally suspected:

http://www.cobras.org/cob_10.htm
http://animal.discovery.com/fansites.../facts_02.html

I believe it was ViperKeeper who told of a story in one of his videos where he visited a King Cobra exhibit over seas, noticing that one of the massive King Cobras was drooling and appearing rather sluggish. He notified the handlers who simply entered the enclosure, with twenty or so Kings, and walked casually amongst them before calling him in to identify which serpent he was speaking about. Reluctant, he entered and watched as the various Kings opened their hoods but remained at a distance...then pointed out the snake, who the handler picked up like a pet and looked at without fear, saying the snake was fine. When asking why he was so calm with such a deadly snake, hinting towards them being defanged or complete venomoids, the keeper expressed avidly that they were not defanged or devenomated and that the Kings were far more intelligent than people gave them credit for. He said that the older ones would actually get in between feisty newer ones to prevent them from biting handlers by expressing dominance and forcing the newcomer into backing down upon advancing towards a handler...that they understood who feeds and takes care of them.

That story pretty much blew me away, and I've read others that depict an intelligence nearing our own. This made me wonder...are the stories of the Naga myth or potentially lore behind a factual race that simply vanished...perhaps to avoid a chaotic, and technologically advancing, humanity whom would undoubtedly see them as a threat within the future? They were depicted as thriving under the Earth...and that might just be where they dwell to this day...avoiding the race whom they once interacted with...remaining in the depths until we destroy ourselves or reach a far more understanding point in our development that won't have the majority of your xenophobic groups avidly seeking to destroy anything different, and intelligently on par or advanced, than they...

Just a thought.

Pleosaurs: still living in lakes?

  • Posted on February 19, 2011 at 5:27 pm
There are tons of "Loch Ness" type monsters living in lakes.Could Pleosaurs be the only dinosaur that is not extinct, or is this some other new cryptid?

to make this just a TAD more interesting, one diving photographer went into the lake to prove whether or not Nessie is real. when he came out, he swore that nobody was to look upon the photos he took forever ! What did he see?

(note: I might have mispelled pleosaurs. I have no idea how to spell it)

Human/nonhuman hybridization

  • Posted on August 22, 2010 at 2:21 pm
I have been reading a large amount of ancient folk lore and I have recently been struck by how common stories of human hybrids with mythical races. The Irish mythology of the Fey or Grey Neighbors and how they would on rare occasions take human wives, or Fey females would take human husbands and they would produce viable offspring with unusual talents. The stories in christian mythology about human/demon offspring, especially Cambions (Merlin was reported to have been one, which was said to explain his mystical powers). The cross breeding of humans and various species of humanoids has been common throughout folklore. I even remember anecdotes of humans having children with Djinn who took humanoid forms. Most recently we have stories about Human/Grey hybrids, and human/alien hybrids.

So I really was wondering about two questions. How many of you believe that there are human/nonhuman hybrids walking among us, living normal lives. Relatively unaware of their extraordinary origins and ancestry?

My second question is, what is it about humans that makes us so apparently useful for interbreeding? Honestly, you don't hear about Fey/demon hybrids, or Djinn/Alien hybrids, that might actually be a bit scary if they existed XD.
Bit of a random moment, if hybrids exist, what would happen if a human/x hybrid had kids with a human/y hybrid. Would you create a human/x/y cross, and what would happen if you crossed that with a human/z hybrid.. really that could get messy, and interesting. Ok, I guess I am done for now, sorry if this seems poorly written, I am a tad rushed now.

Half animal, half plant

  • Posted on July 17, 2010 at 11:11 am
Bizarre sea slug is half plant, half animal Scientists discover chlorophyll-producing sea slug that can carry out photosynthesis using genes swiped from plants. By Stephanie RogersThu, Jan 14 2010 at 2:58 PM EST It looks like any other sea slug, aside from its bright green hue. But the Elysia chlorotica is far from ordinary: it is both a plant and an animal, according to biologists who have been studying the species for two decades. Not only does E. chlorotica turn sunlight into energy — something only plants can do — it also appears to have swiped this ability from the algae it consumes. Native to the salt marshes of New England and Canada, these sea slugs use contraband chlorophyll-producing genes and cell parts called chloroplasts from algae to carry out photosynthesis, says Sidney Pierce, a biologist at the University of South Florida in Tampa. That genetic material has since been passed down to the next generation, eliminating the need to consume algae for energy. However, the baby slugs can’t carry out photosynthesis until they’ve stolen their own chloroplasts, which they aren’t yet able to produce on their own, from their first and only meal of algae. "We collect them and we keep them in aquaria for months," Pierce told LiveScience. "As long as we shine a light on them for 12 hours a day, they can survive [without food]." Pierce and his colleagues used a radioactive tracer to ensure that the slugs are now producing the chlorophyll themselves and not gathering it from algal contamination in the aquaria. Crustacean biologist Gary Martin of Occidental College in Los Angeles sums it up in one word: “Bizarre”. “Steps in evolution can be more creative than I ever imagined,” said Martin Link
