“May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you’re wonderful, and don’t forget to make some art—write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself.”

[Article] Japanese Temple Incorporates Anime with Buddhism

  • Posted on December 31, 2010 at 2:11 pm

Those who’ve been following (for example) Osamu Tezuka’s Buddha graphic novel and its film adaptation, or Deepak Chopra’s “Buddha” comic book, know that it’s not so new to mix Buddhism and comics. But it does seem to work, and one Buddhist temple is getting in on the act.

Richard Florida = Lyle Lanley

  • Posted on December 31, 2010 at 1:24 pm

Lyle Lanley Richard Florida = Lyle Lanley

Willy Staley writes:

The Plot: Springfield comes into a few million dollars from Montgomery Burns, who had been fined by the EPA for dumping nuclear waste in city parks. At a town hall meeting to decide what to do with the funds, Marge suggests they fix up Main Street, and the people of Springfield appear ready to agree on that, until Lyle Lanley steps in from nowhere and sings a song about the benefits of a monorail. Long story short, Lanley sells Springfield a faulty monorail and skips town with the profits. It turns out—like Florida—that he had been doing his song-and-dance routine all over the country.

Now I am not suggesting Florida went from town to town deliberately scamming people just like Lanley did (MacGillis stops just short of doing so). But, his product—shiny and new as it is—simply isn’t a fit for every community, just like Lanley’s monorail.

As MacGillis points out, a “tautology lies at the heart of Florida’s theory that has limited its instructive value all along: Creative people seek out places that draw a lot of creative people.” Worse yet, Florida is now admitting that this is true, and by doing so, he “has now taken this closed-loop argument to another level by declaring that henceforth, the winners’ club is closed to new entrants.” And yet before taking this stance, Florida spent years selling his brand of economic development to places like Elmira, New York and Sackville, New Brunswick.

Next American City: Richard Florida’s Monorail

Staley goes on to cite approvingly Matthew B. Crawford’s Shop Class as Soulcraft on economic development.

My thoughts on Florida, and his rival Joel Kotkin, are here and here.

fuckyeahtattoos:

This is my second tattoo, a fact I never thought would happen due to me having fibromyalgia, a chronic pain condition. But I’m strong and I wanted it and so I did it.

When I read Slaughterhouse-Five, I was in Four Winds Psychiatric Hospital, as I had attempted suicide. The phrase really struck home with me, as it is repeated one hundred and sixteen times in the novel, reiterating that life, no matter what, does in fact go on.

The period is blue, and it will get lighter as it heals, is a reference to the photograph “Pale Blue Dot”. It’s a photograph that the space probe Voyager 1 took of Earth from the very edge of our solar system. In that picture, we appear only as a pale blue dot, smaller than the size of a pixel. And to imagine that everything, our whole lives, fights, triumphs, worries, everything is on just that minuscule dot.

Well to me, they really just tied together. And that’s my tattoo.

My experiences in Weather Magick

  • Posted on December 30, 2010 at 6:46 pm
Someone was interested in my weather magick so here it is in a reasonably sized nutshell:

I have made weather for six years now, channeling the energy that is the lifeforce at the core of every being to bring life to all that lives. I started this as my teacher (who says that he has not taught me anything) is a weather mage. I am connected to him and his current in my practices but mostly I have had to learn by doing
and generating the story as I go. At first I was struck blind by the power that a weather mage has. It was hard not to think that this, what I do, affects all life on this planet. Nowadays it is clear to me that everything that everyone does affects everything that exists and being a weather mage is just everyday, ARKI (gematria 231, the three highest sephiroth) as it is called in finnish.

The weather mage has a huge responsibility and it is not possible to make unnatural weather with conscious effort. There is a law preventing that. The weather strikes back as a huge force. This is the tsunami and this is the hurricane. A careless weather mage could cause them but more probably it will all happen in your head. In making weather one is swept away by a huge understanding of oneself and see that one cannot lie to oneself for one knows oneself and know how one wills, feels, thinks and is. "I am totally open to the world. My motives must be clear and I have to have a vision of how the life should be and be prepared to fight to live that life."
All there is to conquer is myself. This shall set the world free. If these principles are not honored, the result is psychosis, even death. Making a drought can be be a weather mages objective, but the weather will fight back and produce a negative current as a disruption of the mages intent if an fear filled anti-life or purely ego-boosting attitude or is included in the weather spell. Weather is all about life and living. Through weather it is possible to live forever or die instantly. Making weather is to be a consciousness observing and willing. A heart feeling and judging. Ethics and aesthetics combine in making weather. Although you are responsible for your actions, it's all just a dream of sorts. And this dream can be molded. Weather can be controlled by intent as can be contents of a dream. It is a dialog though. You can only speak to the weather and hear its answer. If you build your relationship with weather on compassion, the weather will follow your will.

Even though it is impossible to make weather with evil intent without serious consequences, it is possible to make mistakes. In the year 2006 there was a drought in the finnish summer and the main cause was that I was doing weather and was having too much fun sitting in the park drinking beer that I forgot about nature. With every beer I opened, I called forth Maija, the finnish weather goddess (more about her later) and set my intent on the sun shining. And the sun shone. And it shone. Every day, full blast. The whole summer through. The result was that 30% of Helsinki area trees died and the crops in all Finland were very small. The lawn was yellow in every park and people were losing their minds after partying in the sun for two months. As I heard from a friend of mine, J.U., he had put an end to this about the same time I woke up and saw what my intent had done. I let the weather go free ("be what you want") and J.U. without knowing this set out on a mission to make rain. And the rains came. All the summers after that I have let the rain fall. I am better at making sun than
rain so I just leave a chance for the rain to come and let other weather mages actually produce the rain. I usually make the rain stop. I am good at that.

At first, when I started my weathermaking career I made every second of my life meaningful towards weather. I felt the sun with my inner organs and saw the connection between my bodily alchemy and the weather as a totally synchronized whole. I see this now too but am not obsessed with it as I was back then. Now I make weather one season at a time and mostly I just let the weather be. I am in awe looking at weather and feeling a deep connection to it. I connect to it in my rituals but I don't put into my work any specific intent to cause weather. I just let it blossom, let it give life. I am one with nature and it's law. It is enough that I get my life from the weather. I feel gratitude. This is, I've seen, very effective. It gives me a sense of purpose as an operating agent of the game of life.

I do four intentional weather rituals in a year and otherwise connect to the weather just to get my own lifeforce from it. It seems the less I make weather, the better the weather gets. The two last winters and summers have been archetypical. The summer lush, green, full of life and the winter white, cold and meditative. I have connected with the powers I see as generating the weather to put my own intent as seeds within the weather. It, my willed thoughts that is, are manifested in weather in a timeframe I set. I am riding the weather. I set my intent and see it happen. Fall and spring are transitions between the stations of summer and winter. The summer (fire, masculine) and the winter (earth, feminine), are at the starting point and the ending point of the tetragrammaton. The weather has the code air (east, spring), fire (south, summer), water (west, autumn), earth (north, winter) written into it. It is the source of a perfect magickal circle. I practice the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram several times a week. Also I do Qigong and yoga. I meditate on daily basis. I do dreaming.

In the autumn I make a slow downward curve in the temperature so that nature has time to prepare for winter. In the springtime the temperature has to go up but not too fast because that could cause nighttime below-zero temperatures in an countereffective fashion and be very harmful to plants that have woken up and started to grow and photosynthesize "too early". The weather mage needs to be patient and listen to nature and its needs.
To breathe with the wind is a powerful state of mind. This what is inside is also there outside. As above, so below. I am the music that plays and the music is synchronised with the scenery. The weather shows symmetry in infinite dimensions.

How does one then use their intent to make weather? First of all, the paradox of being a weather mage is that
no human can make the weather. The weather is made by the sun reacting with the earth. This is the law. We are only watchers and recipients. Except, there is a loophole, the paradoxical weather mage who sees himself happening in the universe in harmony with the universe happening in himself.

The sun and earth are the first significant pair in my weather mythology. These connect to the crown chakra, heart and genitals (sun in each one) and the earth below the feet. Earth I call AKKA (gematria 42) and the sun I call VKKO (gematria 116 = 2 + 6 = 26 = YHVH = 6 + 2 = 62) or PHRKHLH (gematria 345; AL ShDI, God Almighty; Perkele is a common curseword in finnish but has basis deep in the finnish pagan religion. Perkele is VKKO, The Thunder God, The giver of Seed, The fire of the sky, The Sun). These are the first powers to connect to when making weather. To feel the sun and the earth with your body is a great exercise in any case but it is mandatory to the weathermaker. The weather is made by the powers of nature and the weather mage is simply a channel for those powers to manifest. The weather maker has a voice and by using that voice he can put his intent to the weather; a process I call "äänestäminen" which means "to vote" or "to hunt sound" (sound is connected with weather through gematria as is shown further down). This is a constant process within the body of the weather maker. Every time I make my morning coffee or KAHVI (gematria 42 as is that of AKKA and MAA, the earth) I connect the stove to the sun by setting the temperature dial to 6 three times (666 = the sun). So now as I drink the coffee, I fortify my connection with VKKO and AKKA by meditating on their mutual lovemaking. I see the weather being born from this brewing system that starts with the sun and ends with the earth. Usually
this results to a change in the weather, either clouds appearing or disappearing, depending on the weather at the onset of the ritual and my intent (if there is one other than to connect).

The second important pair in the weathermaking process is Taivos and Suora, the two interacting powers of the ley lines. Taivos means "a bending" which is "a blending" without the letter of the law (L) and is therefore chaotic. Taivos is a forever bending force that is one of the more primal archetypes of the universe. Suora means "straight" and brings the law back to the equation for it's gematria is 337 = 3 + 10 = 13 = 31 = LA. The goal-oriented Suora molds the chaotic Taivos into manifesting form. The leys can be felt with ones body and they can be used to focus intent on a goal. This is done by walking the leys and speaking ley line language, grasping for the synchrony of thought and deed. Doing ley line exercises is great for the spirit. One can take a walk in nature to achieve a state of mind. This is what everyone does as they walk in the woods. The state of mind is the objective of the intent of the walker. The content of intent can be also a weather condition like sunshine or rain. "It will rain when I get back home." It is safer to study the ley lines with other intents closer to one's own life than go straight to weathermaking, but it is a very effective crashcourse in the psychodynamics of the universe if one starts with the weather.

The weathermaker must have a clean ethos, he cannot lie to anyone, including the lies one tells to oneself. These will shine in the light of greater being of weather and fall back on the weathermaker aspirant. You must totally know who you are, what you do and why before you can start making weather. If you start weathermaking without this, the results vary from very boring (the weather does not change at all to the will and imagination of the magickian) to catastrophic (in personal or common universes). This is due to the intent being imperfect and muddled by egoistical thoughtforms that cannot go to the weather. The catastrophy is usually in the weather mages own life, not the weather. Making the weather makes you look from the standing point of all life. All life must be protected with the weather and let go it's natural way. This means one has to develop compassion to the level that everyone and everything living is loved, looked after and cared for by the weathermaker. One can make weather without being a buddha but must then prepare for serious lessons in life and being on this planet. Weathermaking is one gateway to buddhahood. Being a buddha: not mandatory but helps a lot.

The third important pair in my weathermaking is the stones and the trees and their collective consciousnesses. The stones represent life, stability and the infinite. The trees represent death, the passing and the finite. The stones are the makers of routes on earth and the trees are the guides on these routes. The connection with earth's metals is hinted at in the magickal formula VITRIOL, "Visita Interiora Terrae, Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem" == "Visit the interior of the Earth, by straightening (SVORA) you shall find the hidden stone". The stones are the magnetic influence of the earth to the body of all living and the trees are the knowledge of how to use that magnetism to bring forth life. The stones and trees have conciousness but as stated earlier it is collective. This means that every tree is deeply connected to every other tree and every stone is just a part of the whole stone (earth). To connect to these conciousnesses so deeply that it will affect the weather, one must give up everything and live for these conciousnesses. The words I use to connect are: "Stones and Trees, You are my Life, You are my Destiny." This I say with my arms stretched out to touch the sky and my feet firmly on ground, my gaze fixed at the level of the horizon.

In this ritual I call forth the fourth important pair in weathermaking: Nuit and Hadit as the Master Therion called them. He was not the first to meditate on infinite circle and infinitesimal point though. They came to me through my own Kalevala- and Castaneda-based work years before I had heard of Crowley. They together form the sign of the sun, the ring of the soul with the dot of consciousness in the center. I imagine a light in my heart that is Hadit and Nuit is represented by a great luminescent sphere that is behind everything. They reflect the light of each other. This I call the key to Kalevala. To the one who knows this key the stones and trees are willing to do anything. I usually call the stones and trees with this key in my mind first once, then set my weather related intent ("The sun will shine tomorrow" or "The winter will be cold and snowy") then the second
time to close up the ritual. And always with the words "Stones and Trees, You are my Life, You are my Destiny.", thus giving my powers at their disposal and giving them the connection to Nuit and Hadit which they cannot form consciously themselves. As I say "Life" I imagine Hadit in my heart and as I say "Destiny" I imagine the Nuit-sphere in space. And all the time I connect my mind with the minds of stones and trees. I let the words ring on in my head all the while I feel the stones and the trees below me and around me. I see the stones, the trees, my heart and the circle behind everything and just breathe.

There is a deity in finnish mythology who is one of the many connected to weather. I have found her presence
useful in weather making. She is Maija, Maija Ilmatar ("Airress"), the Queen, the mother of the legendary hero Väinämöinen, the finnish equivalent for a boddhisattva. Funny coincidence, Siddharta Gautama's mother was also Queen Maya. Maija has a very interesting gematria, MAIIA = 62. This number has a connection to many finnish words that relate to weathermaking in some way. First of all, remember that VKKO's (The god of Thunder and Sun) gematria was 116 that is 62 (1 + 1 + 6 = 6 + 2 = 62). There is a close connection with VKKO and MAIIA. Also YHVH = 26 = 2 + 6 = 62. The finnish word meaning weather is "sää". SAA's gematria is also 62. This means that Maija is the weather. The finnish word for sound or voice is "ääni". AANI's gematria is 62. This means that Maija is vibrating matter making a noise. This noise is Life itself. The word "elämä" in finnish means both noise and life ("pidetään elämää" is both to make noise and to hold life). Ääni also means "My 'Ä'". Sounds a bit like "Maija". The word ALLA in swedish means "All" and it's gematria is 62. This points out that weather is for all. KAALI is also 62. This can be seen as a reference to the hindu goddess Kali or to the head (Kaali = Helsinki slang for head). The weather is channeled through the conciousness that is seated in the head. VKKO, the all-father is living in the the crown chakra and the crown chakra is affecting the earth through the body. LVKV (luku) is 62 and is finnish for "a count", the idea behind number. The weather is made by manipulating the sacred geometry of the earth and the numbers behind words of power that are used to make weather. IANA (jana), 62, means a line segment and refers to the weather being made by one intent between two points, the starting weather and the result weather. As weather is made in Taivossuora, everything bends and lines can be curves too. This enables the making of transitions in weather. IALKA, 62, finnish for "foot"
means that weathermaking is a journey and is done with a connection to the earth. KALIA, also 62, means beer and refers to the weather being a process like brewing. Beer is sacred to Maija.

I connect to Maija by calling her name and thinking of the weather as the lifegiver. Her colour is radiant blue and she can be seen in the blue color of the forest when looked at from afar and the blue sky and water. Also moon that is Maija's planet is blue sometimes. As Maija is Kuu-ningatar (Queen of the moon) she is connected to the cycles of life and the tides and the subconscious. The tides affect the weather. As sea-currents are affected by tides, so are the air-masses above. The moon also has its part in weather.

The weathermaker always puts a kela (a "reel", Helsinki slang again, or a current of thought) into the weather. This is a thoughtform that travels into the minds of the recipients of weather. I use currents that are about the wellbeing of all, like showing compassion or having courage. The need to balance things is also always present in weathermaking. The weather is a chaotic system that is connected to itself and all life in countless causal links that are the handles that the weather maker grabs and manipulates. All for the wellbeing of all.

With my six years of practicing I can state that it is all worth it. Nothing gives better advice on how to live than the lifegiver itself. Weather is the root for all being and nothing would exist without it. Making weather is the key to the global consciousness (Gaia) and the archetypal world of ideas. The whole thing boils down to the sun making love with the earth and the moon giving a rhythm to the sea. The clouds form in the sky and with them
travels information around the globe.

The weathermaker is at the peak of evolution, a superhuman that cannot do but his will. The weather forces you to find your True Will. And the will is for the benefit of all beings. "Love is the law, love under will", said the Great Beast once and through all hells this sentence echoes to the ears of the weathermaker. Being a weathermaker has been the most important thing for me for the last six years and now as I build my life it is always in my mind. The weather is a beautiful thing but can cause horrible fates if meddled with carelessly. The weathermaker must surrender himself as a channel for endless compassion for all. The weather is a great teacher. To make weather you don't need anything but clean intent. Getting a clean intent means giving up all egoism and surrendering to the greatest will (your own). This does not mean that you should give up anything you need in life. On the contrary, all you give up are the restraints that hinder you from living a full life. The weather is life and the weathermaker is the channel for life as are all that live. The weathermaker is just a normal human being, a basic guy (perusjätkä). All glory to Ukko Perkele, the Sun, and Akka Maatar, the Earth, and their daughter Maija, the weather, whom I shall always love.
